"Water's ability to seemingly clean itself, to rejuvenate, to flow and keep flowing no matter what we throw at it is a strange sort of illusion. If you fell a forest, the trail of destruction is there for people to see. But water is different, it keeps the secret for you … Some … are drying up and disappearing altogether, but many, in a heartbreaking display of trying to do the right thing, just keep flowing."

"You can probably date everything that went wrong with modern civilisation to the moment parent became a verb ... Did this vast army of men and women dedicated to the hour-by-hour comfort and stimulation of their offspring cause unprecedented joy in the younger generation? Well, read the papers and make up your own mind."

This is one of those books where I'm thinking:
1. Compelling story, brilliant writing, original theme, all the wows
2. Children's book? Really?
3. Surely in fact a book about a child for adults.
Anyone agree?

AH shares his experience meeting Peter Jackson and Steven Speilberg, and his verdict on Wellington take-away food. Or does he? Autobiography or fiction?
