reading an older translation of symposium/phaedrus and the intro is hilariously homophobic. it’s like “so yeah they talk about kissing their homies after they get back from war. But french people kiss each other all the time. maybe they’re just freaky like the continentals are freaky. Ever consider that, pervert?”

maybe the hardest book i've ever read and yet i know i'm immediately going to want to read it again and rip it apart w/ annotations once i'm done. also "fanny assingham" is absolutely vile character naming work, thank you mister james.

occasional moments of brilliance stifled by dense, dense, dense and frustrating go-nowhere prose; it feels like i’ve been reading this for months. i DO very much want to finish it, but holy god, it genuinely feels like slogging through mud at times.
