Deeply moving. I found myself pausing in between pages to let her story sink in and to reflect.
One of the books on North Korea recommended by BBC.

5 stars if Highsmith could leave out some details which made me wonder at their purposes. Details such as Therese leaving the bed unmade, for Florence to do it, etc.
It is very beautifully written otherwise; it could only be done by a writer who is very perceptive, especially when it comes to human emotions.

"Perhaps what had greatest influence here was that special poor man's pride, which brings it about that in some of the special rituals obligatory for one and all in out daily life, many poor people turn themselves inside out and spend every last kopeck of their savings, only so as to be 'no worse than others' and 'not to be condemned' somehow by these others".

Some stories aren't so good :(
