I wanted to read to see what the fuss was about, thirty years late.
It's too bad that Kaplan had access to Saad's Orientalism yet still only saw the region as a failed version of West Europe, not it's own distinct and valid society recovering from waves of imperialism forced on it, albeit with many challenges. 70 pages in and it's not clear whether he sees local people as real humans.
