Ms Reid, I still think the writing is subpar but I love that there is more focus on mental health, hockey and homophobia in men’s sports. The character work is where these books truly shine and what made me come back. I’m glad Heated Rivalry got optioned and turned into a wonderful surprise of a tv show.

I had hoped to finish this before my London trip, but it’s turned into a travel companion. Still enjoying it!

Fucking harrowing read. I knew there was child labour in the cobalt supply chain for batteries but I had no idea of the extent of it. Thousands of children, some as young as 7 or 8. And the fact that sexual abuse of women and girls is a common occurrence in the mines. The world has simply failed the Congo in every regard.

Seeing my book buddy’s review of this, I was a bit worried but so far, I’m enjoying this quite a bit. So much to uncover and I have zero theories rn because I don’t know the exact genre of this book 😅

I fear the writing is a little too whimsical for my liking, but Paul Giamatti makes this a pleasant listening experience even though the story isn’t really my cup of tea.

Who knew Paul Giamatti was such an excellent narrator ♥️

I can’t honestly say I’m particularly engaged. I find the story interesting and the themes important, but the writing just doesn’t work that well for me. Not sure if it’s the narrator – I loved Nguyen’s other book, The Refugees, so not sure what it is about this one…

I don’t think this is my kind of genre but I’m still quite engaged in this, gory details and all. The audiobook is very good.

But more coming-of-age, student athlete stories are definitely not in my future – I hope this soon leans more into the psychological/horror/queer story I’m looking for 😅

Giggling and kicking my feet. This is exactly the kind of summer read I was craving. 😌

Reading this at a bookish picnic in a park is just so lovely. The beautiful descriptions of nature and the reverence with which Erdrich explains the Ojibwe’s view of it is quite special.
