…I can’t believe I got this book off the local library’s mental health awareness rack. It ought to come with the suicide prevention hotline stamped on the first page, and I’m not being facetious.

This book is beautifully written depression personified

God, these covers are just the worst.

So far, it’s like if Janet Evanovich wrote the Dresden Files, and I’m 100% okay with that.

I like the characters and the world and the story well enough, but a) this should have all been one longer book, and b) I am real tired of the fake fantasy cursing. Real tired.

Why can’t I stop reading these? It’s like…I’m half into the can of Pringles and I lost the lid so I might as well just finish them and thank God I got Kindle Unlimited. To be clear: I am enjoying the shit out of them, but they do tend to run together after a while and I should probably read something else that doesn’t involve alien schlongs for a bit.

Why is this series so completely addictive?

I stayed up to 2am reading this series because I have to know what happens to everyone.

This absurdity is like a delightful bag of Doritos - I will consume it in its entirety and refuse to feel guilty.

The emo fckboy energy is strong in this book, holy crap. Sad bargain bin Thor is sad. But the strength of other supporting characters like Morik and Robillard make it tolerable. I have no idea where the Auck storyline is going and can only hope it ends with Meralda on a murder spree because wow everyone around her is The Worst(tm). And thank you, Drizzt, for the after school special moralizing breaks.

You know, I am pleasantly surprised by the tone this has taken. I confess to not having high expectations of an 80s/90s fantasy series beyond fun characters and magic butt-kicking. But so far amidst the scenery chewing villains is a very real characterization of the consequences of isolation, abuse, and PTSD, even if not in those terms.

Everyone in this book is terrible in the best way. Reading it gives the same kind of perverse pleasure as reading horrible gossip columns.

A beautifully written love letter to New York City that I just don’t have much interest in finishing.

Beautifully written but a bit plodding and murky. Like a late renaissance painting, it’s almost overwrought with detail, to the obscurity of its subject.

Very good but reading post-apocalyptic fiction on the verge of a pandemic seems depressing.

Lord. Not making it past the first page, unfortunately. The prose has the turn of poorly rendered fan fiction.

Hoping there are some good turns ahead as so far I’m not exactly feeling the heroine. She’s ok, just...I dunno, I almost want her to be more broken, more vicious, for an assassin who’s been though what she has. I am coming to this series having read a Court of Baes and Feels first though, so I have high expectations.

This book is weird in the very best way, dredging up the old and weird folklore of the early Christian faith and even deeper, into Greek philosophy and beyond. It’s perfect.

I want to enjoy this - the writing is excellent - but I think I’m just not in the mood for this right now.

I wanted a cheesy break but this is maaaaaaaaybe too cheesy.

I’m enjoying this one more than the first, as the first almost felt like a prologue. We’re getting a little deeper into the characters now, which makes it more appealing.

And Lila continues to be delightfully stabby.
