Living in Shenzhen sounds like surviving in a huge warehouse packed with people deprived of windows and doors.

Perhaps we are too adaptable, I mean as a species.

A bit pedantic. This happens, then this. Then this. Oh, then this. Reminiscent of I. Allende and why her writing irritates me. As if told from a hovering drone.

Everyone seems to like the ending of this book. Kinda wish it would hurry up and get here. But don't we read for the pleasure of the journey not just to arrive at the destination? Sigh.

Had to temporarily cease reading in order to re-glue the binding on this, my first edition Bantam paperback. Sigh.

What a firecracker this is, how prescient.
Tom Robbins - like Vonnegut - spot on about pretty much everything.

about James Pike, who could rationalize his cruel disregard of women, his hypocritical behavior, well, whatever he did:
"That there was an ambivalence and a speciousness about this moral frontiersmanship has not gone unnoticed, but in the rush to call life "only human" I suspect we are overlooking its real interest, which is as social history."

moral frontiersmanship
I love Joan Didion
