I love how the book starts out with the simple premise that single women have been drivers of economic changes, and then the author points a big glaring spotlight on racial inequality within the discourse.

Going into it, MC from the start just annoyed the f* out of me. She's 28/29 years old, and acting like someone half her age. Now I'm a little over halfway through, and the story finally feels like it's picking up. Now I'm feeling a little more invested in the outcome.

Alix St. Pierre is giving Bacall x Betty Davis vibes.

This is for the B&N reading challenge "outside your comfort zone". Definitely *way* outside my usual comfort zone. But one thing I will say is it's direct, middle paced but feels fast, and very short chapters - maybe contributing to the feeling of a faster pace? I could almost see this being turned into a movie. The plot twists are actually unexpected, and I'm looking forward to the conclusion.

Gorbachev was ineffective and indecisive.
Kohl had permanent rosy glasses.
There was an alarming lack of communication from and between some of the most important actors.
Jesus Christ, it was a cluster all around.

126 pages in - I already know this book has earned its place among the ones that have deeply touched me.

Only page 56, but already I feel so drawn in. It's like a really drawn-out version of Age of Adaline - even the same name for the main character!

SO hard to put down!

I can't help but wonder, in the examination of Hatshepsut's ever-morphing public image, whether she might not have begun at some point, possibly to identify as non-binary, but the artists who rendered her commissioned images couldn't really succeed at portraying this correctly because the world was viewed through such a strictly binary lense that they couldn't conceive of any other possibility

I'll be honest: I was not expecting this book to hit me so hard in the feels as regards what it's like being an Asian female in America. Ms. Wan, I'm only a third through the book, but Thank You.

Fair warning: Don't read this while eating. Honestly, the gratuitous graphic descriptions are unnecessary to the overall narrative and could have been left out.

Okay. Idealism aside, the man advocated for social welfare.

How naive can a person be?! And this was written by a man in his 40s. A lot of his statements are incredibly idealistic for a man who is at an age when he should have a better idea of human nature.

How naive can a person be?! I understand that he wrote this in his early 20s, but really?!
