Multiplicity - more than one perspective in a relationship. "come let us reason together" "see as we are seen and know as we are known". "Be curious, never furious." Mutual understanding brings connection. Listen to understand rather than to respond. Multiplicity also applies to our own experiences—normal to feel conflicting feelings. "I am a good parent having a hard time."

Decided to reread this after visiting Forks and Port Angeles in Washington state. So far I'm enjoying it more than the first time around. I might even continue to the second book in the series eventually, but no guarantees ;)

Would it change her? Back in her childhood she used to have holy feelings.. when the sun came down to her like an elevator, she was sure she could step inside and be lifted up, up..She would have these holy days and walk home from school and think, After this I will be able to be nice to my mother, but she never ever was. After this I'll be able to talk only about what matters..but still she went on about the weather

A picture of a new species of tree frog that had recently been discovered. Scientists speculated that the reason it had never before been seen was because, quote, "It is covered with warts and it wants to be left alone."

Every day, their attention must turn, like the shine on a school of fish, all at once, toward a new person to hate. Sometimes the subject was a war criminal, but other times it was someone who made a heinous substitution and guacamole. It was not so much the hatred she was interested in as the swift attenuation, as if they're collective blood had made a decision.

What does not feel like the deliberate prodding of wounds is a simple "I'm sorry," because in its banality it presumes nothing... Concrete and sincere memories from those who knew him comfort the most.

And in the humid ever-summer I dare his picturing mind not to go back to the shout of color, to the clean rasp of frosty air, to the smell of pine wood burning in the caressing warmth of kitchens. For how can one know color in perpetual green, and what good is warmth without cold to give it sweetness?

“Enough! When science has spoken, it is for us to hold our peace.” I actually found this pretty funny because of course this book is full of outdated scientific theories and scientific knowledge is ever-evolving. Lidenbrook is such a funny character and the reluctant narrator is quite great too. Really enjoying this one—I had forgotten how humorous Verne can be :)

In life all must choose at times. Sometimes, two possibilities are good; neither is evil. Usually, however, one is a greater import than the other. When in doubt, each must choose that which concerns the good of others—the greater law—rather than that which chiefly benefits ourselves—the lesser law. The greater must be chosen whether it be law or thing. That was the choice made in Eden. - John A. Widtsoe

"Helpmeet" ... OED defines as "Even with or equal to"

Biblical scholar David Freeman indicates the original Hebrew word in Genesis 2:18 combines two roots, one meaning "to rescue, to save" and the other meaning "to be strong" eventually merging into one word 'ezer' which meant either "to save" or "to be strong," but in time always interpreted as "to help"

One must prospect through and dig into the scriptures like a miner searching for precious metal. Scattered here and there are nuggets, some pure, some alloyed with other doctrines. Occasionally one strikes a rich vein which will yield all that one is willing to earn, for the scriptures do not explain nor interpret themselves. - Boyd k. Packer

Written like a textbook, so I'm reading this slowly. Some symbol interpretations seem obvious, but I suspect the author is trying to be comprehensive, so they are important to include. Right now: parts of the body. The most interesting one to me so far is the forehead. (There are a few doctrinal assumptions in this chapter I don't agree with, but that's to be expected.)

It was sorrowful to think how many..years of toil had been wasted on these musty papers, which were now only an encumbrance on earth, & were hidden away in this forgotten corner, never more to be glanced at by human eyes. But then what reams of other manuscripts—filled not with the dulness of official formalities, but with the thought of inventive brains & the rich effusion of deep hearts—had gone equally to oblivion

It is a good lesson—though it may often be a hard one—for a man who has dreamed of literary fame, and of making for himself a rank among the world's dignitaries by such means, to step aside out of the narrow circle in which his claims are recognized, and to find how utterly devoid of significance, beyond that circle, is all that he achieves, and all he aims at.

There were flavors on his palate, that had lingered there not less than 60 or 70 years, and we're still apparently as fresh as that of the mutton-chop which he had just devoured for his breakfast. I have heard him smack his lips over dinners, every guest at which, except himself, had long been food for worms.

His noble earnestness, his fidelity, his gallant shielding of her, his general conquest of his own wrong & his own pride for her sake, are simply honorable, manly, & true. Nothing less worthy can be seen through the lustre of such qualities in the commonest mechanic, nothing less worthy can be seen in the best-born gentleman. In such a light both aspire alike, both rise alike, both children of the dust shine equally.

Then Caddy hung upon her father, and nursed his cheek against hers as if he were some poor dull child in pain. All this took place in the hall. Her father released her, took out his pocket-handkerchief, and sat down on the stairs with his head against the wall. I hope he found some consolation in walls. I almost think he did.
