I'm instantly in Canada, in the life of a teenager whose parents are about to change her life by joining a cult, moving the family to an SDA commune. She doesn't understand it's a cult, just that things are weird and she doesn't want to move, doesn't want to be forced to live in a commune with people who have turned off their critical thinking. The chapters are named after recipes-- Nuteena, Beet Roll, etc

This book is so much more than I anticipated. History, sociology, gastronomy, anthropology, memoir ... so incredibly glad I picked it up.

Lisa is on page 26 of 278 of You're Not Listening: What You're Missing and Why It Matters
The introduction was good, examples of listening and what happens when a person knows someone is really listening to them. But, so far, chapter one is a moral panic about modern life and how we're all going to die lonely because of screens. I vividly remember my grandparents not having deep conversations with each other, living a utilitarian life, and they didn't have Twitter. Screens are a symptom, not the problem.

I don't think I'll finish. This book is SO slow and the characters are still flat several chapters in.

Lisa is on page 18 of 372 of Because of Eve: Historical and Theological Survey of the Subjugation of Women in the Christian Tradition
Unfortunately, the writing is choppy and points are not well developed in what I've read so far. If it continues this way, I won't be able to get through it. I'm going to skip ahead to a different chapter and see if it improves.

I'm on vacation and finally making some progress in this great book. The first sections were not as interesting to me as they contained information I already knew. The author then brings in fascinating research from medieval history. This book is a treasure.

Just reading the introduction, I'm already leery. They cite the behavior of some people on social media as evidence that the disk is social justice movement is taking over our society and culture. 🙄 Do some people engage in cancel culture? Yes. But it's not new. It's just more apparent and easier to engage in with even less meaning. Bullying on social media just replaces bullying in person. Not new.

This book is fascinating! So much to think about. And it's also incredibly refreshing to see a Christian book that acknowledges many of the contradictions I have noticed in the Bible.

So far, it's all over the place. Healthy advice mixed with some really bad advice. The book feels like the two authors never communicated or tried to coalesce their thoughts. It's disjointed.

So far, I'm not finding this book to be worth the purchase price. It's not bad, but it feels a little trite.
