What if you do your absolute best & follow a strict moral code never realizing until the very end of your life that you missed everything? We learn about life and politics in this historical period of change from the unreliable narration of an English butler, who frustratingly missed much of what really happens around him. Ultimately the reader is left to ponder what he will do with the remains of the day after all.

The profound revelations were obvious at best, more often nonsensical. What could have been an intriguing first person account of a spy during a tense time fell flat and read more as a self-involved person’s attempt at pretense and perversion. Forces finish for me though I thought perhaps it was due to the narration of the audiobook at first and then hoped there would be something redeemable at the end.
