What ancient women put up with in a church so unquestioningly saturated with patriarchal ideology is sickening. My admiration for them grows.

Gettin' real tired of this nonsense.

Hm. Nearly 100 pages in and tempted to DNF...it just feels like such a chore to read. It's not just that the tone is incredibly dark (lots of yuck), or the worldbuilding nonsensical, or that the plot is taking FOREVER to get anywhere, but also there is no one--not one single likeable character to root for. Was I led astray by an inextricably high goodreads rating??

Hm. Nearly 100 pages in and it feels like such a choreto read. It's not just that the tone is incredibly dark, or that the worldbuilding is hard to follow, or that it's taking FOREVER to get anywhere plot-wise, but perhaps most importantly.........there's no one to like. Genuinely no one I like so far. Confused why it has such a hugh average rating. Tempted to DNF.

Nouwen mentioned St. Teresa of Avila a couple times in the first chapters, but I'm honestly shocked how much this book so far sounds just like a modern rendition of Teresa's Interior Castle. [Insert meme of her writing and him looking over her shoulder, copying notes]

The whole student-teacher dialogue format is not all that effective if the former never really pushes back on the latter. I'm willing to hear Johnson's ...radical positions, but she has a habit of dropping them into the conversation and moving on without enough elaboration.
(The post-resurrection appearances of Jesus were some kind of vision experience, for example...)

She's starting to lose me a little bit by blaming EVERY theological abuse of vulnerable people or peoples in the last 1000 years as an application of the Satisfaction Theory of atonement. No one theory or model is every going to cover the whole of the gospel, but it's equally erroneous to throw them out entirely. Still, interested to see where she goes from here...

Just finished the forward & introduction and can say I'm hooked so far. Gives me hope that my two semesters of Hebrew as an undergrad may not be wasted after all.

It's nearing the end, and it's very exciting. Though, i can hardly belive it will have a happy ending.
