To be a man was to be "rational, godlike, angelic..." qualities valued in her culture...Several of our spiritual foremothers were referred to by their contemporaries as "this female man of God"--deemed a complement!
What ancient women put up with in a church so unquestioningly saturated with patriarchal ideology is sickening. My admiration for them grows.
