This is a perfect Halloween read. I love a historical ghost story! I hope the ending doesn't let it down...

This story is definitely red in tooth and claw...

I'm loving this so far: a story, within a story, within a story. Three distinct voices - really well rendered. Reminds me of 'The Terror' - a rich historical spine-tingler. Let's hope it carries on as well as it's started...

Somewhere in Capter 7 and the clichés keep coming, thick & fast:

'I've been in this business twenty years, and I've never seen anything like it' ...

'Damn him and his cop brain...' This is not good. There's bad dialogue and a clunky exposition overload already in chapter one. I don't know how much I can take of this... one...

I feel drunk just reading this.... ;)

Helen Dunmore is very good at creating authentic settings - she never overdoes or overexplains the period details...

This is a lot of fun! I hope the ending will be good. Fingers crossed...
