Audio only various narrators. quite interesting stories. several have to do with mental health and how we are all different and how it effects our view of the world around us. good and sometimes excellent in plot but not always sure where it is going till the end. Hard to see a proper theme but love Nunez observations of that come thru in these characters.

"as it was the white man's way to assert himself in any landscape, to change it, make it over a little (at least to leave some mark of memorial to his sojourn), it was the Indian's way to pass through a country without disturbing anything, to pass and leave no trace, like a fish in water or bird through the air."

I am amazed at the history and geological information. A combination of John McPhee and Eric Larson rolled into great writing and a gentle voice. Using both the print and the audio done by David Ackroyd for my reading. Dense at times and not an easy read as far as plot but oh the language

in early pages this seems more like a group of linked short stories than a novel or perhaps a road trip by mule. Lots of great learning of history, impossible to know if fact or fiction but oh the rabbit holes on this dirt road that the reader could fall into

on sale for $2+ on Audible so I picked it up. Wanted some more Scandinavian lit after reading the The Memory of Love by Olsson.

Its losing something in the dual timelines and in the author's effort to keep what really happened a mystery. Its becoming more confusing rather than mysterious and I can see why some readers might lose patience with this story telling.

I'm plugging away and want to read faster but am savoring all the threads and thought and energy in this book. Still the sisters, Kathleen and Lily mostly in this segment but I can feel that Frances will somehow be inserted back along with Mercedes. I can't imagine how this author could not bring them together at the end. BUT so far I can't even manage out this retro hx of Kathleen will play out

So far I am finding this novel masterful.. The slow revealing and foreshadowing has me in its grip. But it is hard on audio. One narrating main character that is telling her present, memories of her past as a young child and also bits about some tragic event unrevealed that happened years ago and after retirement finally led her to come to this place, where maybe the event happened?

i was not crazy about the first in this series but I'm glad I gave it another try. This is proving to be an interesting mystery about women who are killed while hiking. Connelly can always tell a tight mystery with great tidbits of place and time woven in. This is proving most interesting.

Read Mercy by this author and really liked it. Not as sure about this one. Linked stories of people somehow related due to family, extended family or situation and mostly how thinks trickle down even to people who are not directly involved in an event.

Can begin to see how her writing later developed. There are threads here for the Lola Quartet and Station Eleven. Loving this listen

A very complex family saga. My paperback copy has 508 pages so I have about 150 pages left. Now mostly in the saga of Frances, the 2nd oldest of the 3 live daughters. No exactly sure her motivation for copying what she believes happened to her older sister Kathleen. Her motives are so far a little unclear, but people certainly do things for unfathomable reasons.

I feel I'm crawling through this book. No audio to help me out. Just page by page with this family. A complex story but I want to be reading faster, as I'm forgetting how some characters fit, who or why they are
