So far I've encountered a lot of extroverts I don't like, especially those at Harvard Business School.

I reread the first 60 pages or so, when I realized I didn't have the two parallel but contrasting families straight. I'm glad I did, as it allowed me to appreciate more fully Winton's indirection and foreshadowing, and the poetry of his writing.

Sometimes painful. Boyne excels at portraying characters sympathetically even when you wish they would make different choices.

And I don't think of this as chick lit.

I care about the characters, an important criterion for my liking a book.

Slow reading

This is as far as I'm permitted to read until our next class session on 5/8. This engaging book has provoked much class discussion, especially of homosexuality and gender roles in England at the time of WWI. Very well written.

I have just finished "The Fourth State of Matter, and I'm completely blown away by Jo Ann Beard's writing. Thank you, Ruth and Joan, for bringing her to my attention.

The historical background is interesting, as the narrator points out changes.

I can dip into this book only a chapter or two at a time.
