I'm halfway through and there is neither sex nor rage so far. This could be such a good book on the shallowness and numbness of LA elite culture or even just Jacaranda's alcohol issues, but it's so disjointed and difficult to follow that scenes blur into one another and there is little buildup or pay off. Characters also seem to come out of nowhere and many feel like cardboard cut outs just meant to fill up the page

I would think if one is writing a heavily semi-autobiographical novel one would keep overly flattering descriptions of the main character to a minimum. But apparently Eve Babitz does not feel this way

"She recalled a recent event where she got legally high with some booksellers, became convinced she was dying, drank an entire pitcher of cucumber water, and then fell to the ground so slowly that she accidentally showed the entire room her snatch, all the while crying out for someone to Call an Ambulance." Okay, very occasionally this book is genuinely funny
