fifth story: "The Triumph of the Night"

classic "man has to stay overnight at a spooky mansion with a stranger" story. first dud of the bunch.

story four: "Kerfol"

this story has fukn dog ghosts. ghosts of dogs! i was hooting and hollering and woof-woof-woofing the whole time. loved it.

very fun but also learned about myself in this first chapter that i am more afraid of bear attacks than i realized. thanks Piper

i... might just have to give up on this.

it feels like "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" - a lot of talent and skill, but fundamentally there are only three joke templates that are just being cycled through over and over. it feels so tedious even when the jokes work!

story three: "Afterward"

certified banger. an American couple who got rich in a mine scam of some kind move to an English manor with no plumbing and no electricity because they're tired of "conveniences." the house is haunted, but there's no one ghost story or one legend - simply, they are told that they'll see a ghost, but won't realize it was a ghost they saw "until long afterward.

just a home run from there

second story: "The Eyes"

a rich man who is maybe a little too interested in young people tells the story of two times in his life where he would wake up and see a set of floating red eyes at the foot of his bed. great ending!

first story: "The Lady's Maid's Bell"

what if caring for a sick old lady in a big country mansion was actually kind of creepy? a chilling thought!

this book is... not doing for me :/
