Could someone please inform me how the name "Maine" is pronounced? Onselen doesn't include it in his pronunciation guide, presumably because it is common in South Africa. Is it pronounced like the U.S. state?

Not done with this yet, but it's pretty great! Recommend as a winter break novel.

Really excited to start reading this to my 5 year old daughter, who I think is ready for it. One of my all time favorites.

This is so good! Brings back amazing images from my early readings. But also pretty darn weird and scary and maybe too much for my sensitive 5 year old to handle.

I'm a little more than half way through this and would really like to be done. It reads like an 864 page wikipedia article: this happened and then this happened and then this happened. No change in rhythm or tone for hundreds of pages. Right now it feels like two stars, though I'm sure historians consider it an impressive achievement, gathering all these events together into one narrative--if that's what it is.

Must. . . get. . . through the Paradiso.

The Goodreads recommendation algorithm is really manic. I give three stars to one African novel, and it is now recommending to me every novel ever written by an African.
