No, but this is so good? ♡

So, I'd been reading a different book that I was pretty excited about but I was quickly given the advice to read this one instead as it is, apparently, a much better execution of the same core themes. We shall see...good so far.

Definitely started the year with a strong narrative. Praying it stays excellent because I cannot meet another DNF 😫

This concept is so original and unexpected. Truly do not judge a book by its cover.

I like this book so far but I continue to be baffled by male writers choosing to write female characters as one-dimensional, sex crazed entities that use their sexcapades as either valid ways of spending their free time or gaining social status. Women rarely do that. Is that so ingrained in the male psyche that they can't even spare fictionalized women the burden?

I know this book was written in a style that reflects how frustrating it is to live a life wherein literally nothing happens when there is every chance/reason for there to be some action. That's the place, the life, the culture these characters live in. But omg is it hard to read. This is such an important story, and I want to love it but it won't let me...which is brilliant.

Very glad to have access to the audiobook. The way this author uses the names of her characters is excessive. Gaunt and Ellwood are literally every other word. It's horribly distracting...not sure if I'm going to be able to get passed it. This really has a 4.5 star average?

Not sure what the hype is...

So far, one of the rare instances where the movie is better than the book. I can't stand all this pointless rambling??

What. A. Slog. I want to DNF but it's only a few more pages. 😪

It's 25% through and so far all we've gotten is the same man giving various tours to people and explaining everything like an FAQ section. Yes, there are many questions, but the writer could have come up with a more creative way to explain it all.

My flabber has been gasted.

This book has me up at 3am with the lights on. I simply need to know wtf...

When I say this book is genuinely scary, I mean it. Legit been sleeping with the lights on for the past few nights. Can't put it down!

I wanted to badly to like this but I just cannot with the "they/them" BS. I think it would have been okay if the writing was also insightful, but it wasn't. I think cozy reads just aren't my thing. DNF.

Also, why did the author neglect the opprotunity, nay, the duty, to explain what fate befalls those with the infection. She should have gripped us with terror over the true role of a destrier. She should have made us feel the same terror infected one feel by showing what it's like to be hunted or killed or tortured and she should have done it with creativity. Don't spare me the details. Now I'm just bored.

The author should have created more depth and history between Elspeth and Rayvn. Apparently they have been aware of each other since childhood so why isn't there more mention of how they grew up together? It would have been much more intriguing to think that they had been good childhood friends (or enemies) only to have thay relationship deepen/change as adults.

Meh, it's good enough to keep reading but the way this author tried (and failed) to set up an enemies to lovers situation has really put me off. It wasn't well developed or convincing. The overall plot though is pretty original and I'm curious to see where it goes.
