this audiobook is kind of terrible. like the sound changes sometimes and I can tell it was a different recording spliced in, and they cast a terrible narrator. not very expensive and terrible at voicing women, especially when they sing, which is a problem when the second lead is a woman who sings.

I don't mind the magic abortion but the magicking away of disabilities is a bummer. incredible audiobook narrator though

and I don't understand why their father would name them after German fairy tales when they're Ukrainian and the mythology in the story is Ukrainian but this is a retelling of a German fairy tale. and it makes no sense for the sisters to have names from different fairy tales. or just why it's a German fairy tale retelling but the dressings are entirely Ukrainian. it's not blended at all.

"diminutives were a mystery to me; my sisters and I had named that eschewed diminutives" girl ur name is literally the diminutive for Marlene. like it's just so hard to take this book seriously when it makes such an obvious mistake?

idk how I never picked up before how unsubtly this book calls back to fan favorites from the grisha trilogy

I forgot how genius this book is. it's fucking funny, it's got suave writing, compelling world building, and a clever heist. even when I know the twists that happen, I find myself believing lies because they're so well told. it makes it easy to go along for the ride again and again.

i hate it here. like it's everything bad about YA. she's the most specialist girl with unkempt brown hair and he's a white dude with black hair and green eyes and a grey streak in his hair. and he's a flirt and she's probably going to hate him at first.

reading this book is like pulling teeth :(

"yet our conversation took turns that I don't imagine the field agent would have expected, and yet it echoed other Cambodians in the forest" why would you say it like that who uses yet twice in the same sentence that's nonsense. like I wanna enjoy this book but tbh it's not been diving much into the topics I expected and sometimes the writing is unnecessarily confusing

obsessed with the millennial pink of this cover. so appropriate for a book examining the wellness industrial complex which especially targets women, and also appropriate for a book where on literally the first page the writer mentions she's a capricorn.

might just be struggling with high fantasy in general rn, but this writing is def not helping. I want to like the story but so far the writing is distracting me in a bad way :(

ANOTHER Charles!?

rather rich of a character in an Austen novel to say women have too many names. the only thing they have in their defense is that they're not *men* in an Austen novel. there are three Charles in this book!! two are first cousins!

finding it hard this Austen novel to look past the absurd wealth of the characters and the ridiculous concerns that take up so much of the characters lives. like it's a bit distracting how much they really do just hang out

I was keeping my expectations low because while I love her art I'm not familiar with her storytelling abilities but I'm so in love with these characters and this world! This is probably also the slowest I've ever read a comic because the art is so stunning.

chapter 3 is more interesting but this audiobook narrator is still atrocious. he sounds like he's reading the health warnings at the end of a medication ad.

jesus christ the right aligned text, the duel, "I stand for **** **", all of the mechanisms about to collide, "I love my parents" baru said, and that was the truth

struggling to convince myself this is worth reading because the premise is "not only were these policies racist, but they were unconstitutional!!!!!" and I just don't care about the constitution at alllll. struggling to see the importance of proving this segregation was de jure and not de facto when I think the government should respond to segregation regardless.
