Douglas may have good intentions in thought, but, in action, it feels to me that he is relentless in his criticism (how a teen would take it) of his kid, and is totally annoying to be around. He knows he’s annoying, yet persists in running his mouth. I’m not quite 1/3 through, but I know I’d divorce his ass, probably before the kid was off to college. Not the book I need to soothe my nerves this moment in time.

This is my bedtime book. Something soothing. They always take longer to finish, because I fall asleep while listening. So far, the biggest news to me is that, at one time, the Marshall Fields State Street store had the largest bookshop in America on their third floor. Kroch’s (1907) and Brentano’s (1880’s) merged and survived until the 199O’s. I spent hours browsing there whenever I took the El downtown.

Al Pacino has an interesting inner life. He’s a bit of an oddball, though very sweet. Lots of what he’s thinking about. He speaks softly, with a gravelly voice that I quickly got used to. He seems very much to be in the room telling stories, and when I pause the narration, I think to myself – oh, I’ve got to get back to Al, I just left him sitting there mid-story. Very intimate.

Slow going. Not sure I’ll finish before it’s due back to Libby.
