Wow. A word doesn't point to something, but is the thing itself. Poetry isn't art, but spellcasting. Liu writes "If sign and signifier are not a relationship but a single thing, then to use a word is to actually conjure and activate what it refers to. To write poetry is to cast a spell." When we name grief on the page, we call it into being. The word and the thing become inseparable. Poems have always been spells.
