The author paints scenes in detail as was the custom before Hollywood films, TV and the internet including your other connected devices. Towles reminds me somewhat of Tolstoy, Dickens, Thomas Mann, Bellow, Joyce Carol Oates and Anthony Doerr.

The puzzles tease yet are often very easy.

First in a series of Joel Fagliano's delightful yet occasionally challenging puzzles dated 2017, some clues based on current events are recent history. The first thing I do in the morning is making coffee, Next. the mini-puzzles. Compared to the regular and larger Times crossword in the newspaper, the minis are a nice warm-up and very relaxing. For a reader or writer, you find the words and fill them in.

I am doing a random reading, selecting certain passages that the author had originally published as editorials in the New York Times. Dowd has great satirical wit and does not soft petal her criticisms of the two major presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

I think it was Douglas Adams in The fun novel Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who postulated the answer to everything is 42, so I checked that page number, in case that would be a secret code (just kidding). Actually I've read it all, but am starting over. It's that good.
