I think I made it to chapter 36 before the audiobook was returned 😭 hopefully I can find an actual copy and finish it.

I may have to give up on Lynn Austin. The writing is incredibly wooden and stiff.

I’m not a fan of the dialogue between Grace and Dr Stratt.

Page 43 description of Morris: “-he wore oversize glasses and sweaters with strategic holes”
Page 44 description of Morris: “His glasses were round and too small for his face.”

Consistency is key.

Just bookmarking this horribly disgusting and confusing simile:
Just reading this email makes me feel drained, like I’m a tubful of stale water whose stopper’s been pulled.

Could someone explain that to me?!

Synopsis of the book so far:
An immature old woman rode on a train
An old senile woman went on another train ride with her. I don’t know why
A young man played cricket
There’s a love interest and possible love triangle for the young man.
And a whole bunch of vague recollections of some weird vague event that’s somehow vitally important to everything.
I seem to be in a good book drought.

The main character is pretty annoying and selfish. At least the future self acknowledges it and I guess matured.
Charlie is not only puny in stature but also in character and personality. And ability. I’m not entirely sure how I’m supposed to view him, but currently not viewing him favorably.
What do they see in each other? She’s bored? He had nobody else? There’s no good explanation.

Page 4 and I already have two issues:
“It’s not a talent, I was born with it.” That is LITERALLY what a talent is. 🤦🏻‍♀️
She references the song “White Christmas” which wasn’t released until 1954 (I looked it up) and this part of the story was supposedly set in 1943.

Two very glaring mistakes that should have been caught in copy editing.

Her sweater was the color of “unripened cantaloupe”?? How am I supposed to know what that means?! Is it green? Tan? Does she mean the inside or the outside? What a stupid way to describe a color. 🙄

“Sound of his name”? What sound, exactly, does a name make? I’m sure “mention of his name” was what was meant. If this is the type of editing that was done for the whole book, I might have to stop before I get invested.

I’m so confused by the modern day romance part. We’re never told how old this guy is or really what he looks like besides the color of his hair. Then all he does is get tea and make lunch. A few sentences of him showing her London, and suddenly she’s dreaming about a transatlantic romance and how it can’t be? We get zero buildup at all.

I’m pretty sure I’ve read this before. But I can’t remember what happened. So maybe I started it but didn’t finish it.

I also hate when historical writers drop unnecessary cultural references just so we know how much research they did about current events in that time frame.

Her sister in law’s name is Marvel and Marvel’s husband is Stan? Yeah, okay. Is their dog’s name Lee?
I hate when authors do that.

If every dress, room, and scene is going to be described with this much detail, I guess I know why it’s almost 500 pages.

My goal this year is to read through my “Want-To-Read” Shelf as much as I can. I might veer off to read a newly released book, but I’ll stick to WTR as closely as I can.
