Mare once again shames Cal for not wanting to kill Silvers when she herself has complicated feelings about Maven. I just hope to God when they get into a confrontation she wouldn't be hesitating or hoping the "Maven she knew" was still there somewhere because otherwise, she'd be the biggest fcking hypocrite many times over.

Istg Mare is a hypocrite. A few pages ago (193) she said she's willing to trade lives for her victories but now she shames Cal for wanting to ensure Crance doesn't betray them further?? ("If. Cal wants to kill a man based on such a terrible word.")

I'm really confused by Mare's personality. Cal as well. Mare comes off arrogant and she's barely proven herself. Cal is supposed to be a great tactician but he's not good at politics??? I feel like the author is having trouble keeping their characters aligned to their supposed original sketches.

Here goes Mare again, blaming other people for her misfortune. Book 1 was supposed to be her learning stage so I was more lenient but it's book 2 already and it looks like she hasn't learned.

Maven is clearly two-faced. When will Mare realize that..

Oof.. we got a love triangle.. which I hate..

So Laini broke my heart for the nth time and killed Ziri and possibly Liraz. Is there no end to the heartaches T_T

I put off reading this for a little while. I hadn't anticipated that book two would leave me so drained and so scared of what can happen that I had to take a break, constantly. I think it would be impossible for me to read this one straight. The constant dread is as strong as in book two and I honestly can't handle it anymore (weak, lmao). So as not to tire myself, I'm reading fluffy romance books in between.

I'm almost afraid to continue reading.. dread is a constant feeling with this book. Not knowing how things will unfold, who will die, who will live.

Laini Taylor really has a knack for the star-crossed lovers kind of stories. I am so anxious to find out how Akiva and Karou will solve their problems when there's so much keeping them apart and they all seem so insurmountable. (Laini's done it at Strange the Dreamer series.. I wonder how she'll treat it here).

Daughter of "Smoke and Bone." I fully comprehend it now. "Bone" was pretty obvious from her errand gathering teeth but it's significance was never revealed until now and "Smoke" simply from the act of gathering her soul. She was reincarnated. Born again through the smoke that captured her soul and the bones to create a new body. Clever as always.

Ahhh.. what a breath of wonderful air. After binge reading Bardugo's mediocre work the past weeks, it's so nice to be immersed once again in Laini Taylor's lyrical paragraphs. One of her first books but already, her writing is so impressive. I've read Strange the Dreamer (her latest series) and it's crazy how she's improved there when she's already this good here. Truly, one of the best YA authors of today.

70% done since Tuesday last week and haven't had the desire to actually continue.. It's near the end of the story so things should be exciting but it isn't 😭

This is A LOT slower in pace compared to Shadow and Bone trilogy....

Baghra's story about her past makes me think.. What if Mal is a descendant of Morozova? Explains his extraordinary tacking skills.. and Baghra seemed to recognize his voice too..

Heard the news of a Netflix adaptation so hopped on this series! Enjoying it so far.
