I loathe Julia. She isn’t kind, just overbearing and incapable of empathy. Had she been a man forcing her way into a woman’s apartment and cleaning and putting her to bed AGAINST HER STATED DESIRES, we’d hate Julia. I guess she gets a bye because she’s trying to be kind, and because she’s female.

I’m... so... bored. Jane complains that she is bored, and Miss Charming and Heartwright have panicky moments of boredom... but so do I. I barely care enough to keep reading.

Really awful. Reads like the script for a manga without any pictures. Long strings of one-sentence paragraphs, no showing--only telling, and a ham-fisted attempt to summarize the entire manga in words. Amateurish and tedious.

I wish characters would stop psychoanalyzing each other so much, stop talking about their own personalities, and the personal defects and quirks of everyone else. It feels VERY fanfiction-y, and it makes the read extremely tedious. Also, I wish someone would kill Rook so Thom could cry about it, and then move on.

I can't bring myself to read the rest of this book. It's so very boring, I don't care about any of the characters, the plot hooks are weaker than Christmas ornament hooks, and the writing style is repetitive, choppy, and shallow.

I love you so much, dear book, that I'll read you again just to write a paper on you.

Finally made it through the first part. No desire to start the second.

I loooove mermaid stories, but I have started and dropped this book four times now. I think I'll actually just skim for a while. I have ZERO interest in the cliche instant-lust opener.

This is excruciating to read. The poor choice of POV characters kills any semblance of suspense or tension, especially with the hamhanded POV switches in the middle of scenes. Characters pop up in different countries constantly with no mention of travel. People return after long absences with no mention of their return so I wonder if I missed the tearful reunion. Gooey, overly sentimental language.

The prince was left to die with his coin purse still on him? He can easily blend with servants, snap necks, and tend horses with no trouble? This is really unbelievable.

This book promised time travel. Thus far I only have SPESCHUL Mary Sues acting out another tired teen romance.

Stripper mermaids earn thousands of dollars nightly to buy weapons for their kingdom to use in war. Sooo much suspension of disbelief required here.

I'm so sick of this book. I don't want to finish it, but the crappy thing is stuck on my shelf until I force myself to pick it up again.

Really artificial dialogue and character thoughts. Too much tell, very little show. Annoying characters.

Every single person in this book LOVES beautiful, precious, sweet, (supposedly) witty Chelsea, who rescues horses, kittens, and dirty urchins with appalling regularity. They have no lives outside adoring her. Until she enters a room, they can do nothing but talk about her. Self-insert, much?

This is really, really boring. The banter is insipid and everyone talks too much. DO SOMETHING.

Oh crap. I'm not going to get anything done tonight, am I?

Oh no! Don't tell the woman WHY you're protecting her or not sleeping with her or anything. It would upset her small, feeble, weak mind.

Kevign's favorite word "What?" is annoying and an obvious setup for yet another heart-to-heart conversation.

Throwing the words "cogs" and "gears" into whatever you're explaining, regardless of context, does not a steampunk make.

Frederick is not a man at all. He is a middle-aged, conservative woman wearing a man suit. Unbelievable.

The accents are really going to annoy me.

It gets much better.

I'm sure there are words other than 'throbbing' to describe pain, but you wouldn't know it from this book. It's incredibly repetitive.

The mermaid angle seems at best to be an excuse for the heroine to have no voice, and therefore to not object to being abused and seduced by the hero. Pffft
