lord, please give me the strength to finish this random and inconsequential collection of short stories that i picked up. 「この子の絵は未完成」, 「赤い毬」, and「百物語」were all fun and light. these last four are going so slowly and don't get interesting until the last five pages or so. and my japanese isn't good enough to skim. but my goal is to finish ONE (1) book by the end of the year and to start BUTTER or 森崎書店の日々. pray 4 me.

I WILL finish this book. Not going to summarize 桟敷がたり because it was pretty middle-of-the-road. No need to save the brain space. Just a convoluted story about a plane and a bomb and a prank call.

Love how grounded the stories feel. None of them really feel outlandish & besides The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate and Exhalation, they feel plausible so far. Merchant: gate that allows you to go 20 years into the future, Exhalation: an anatomist of a mechanical race desiring to understand the mysteries of own brain, and What’s Expected of Us: a device that can anticipate one’s action.

so far:

i’m not at a point where i can really judge writing quality or formal elements in japanese at all, i’m just fighting for my life, but these are my ratings as far as enjoyment so far.

この子の絵は未完成 4.5/5 (this kid’s drawings smell like what he draws, spawn into real like, and tell the future)
赤い毱 3/5 (girl meets her grandma in a dream)
百物語 4/5
天使のレシート 1.5/5
