Omg, there’s this study I‘ve been searching for and wanted to look into but people always talk so vaguely about it that I hadn’t been able to find it but I think it’s cited here! I will finally know peace

This has cemented my love for crows, ravens, and pretty much all other corvids.

Nit-picky criticism ahead: this is a book where one of the protagonists is supposed to be this genius botanist who knows everything about plants (and fungi, for some reason - I'm not getting into that). A person who is so painfully accurate as to describe his coffee as "bean juice." But coffee "beans" are actually seeds, the fruit is a berry. Pseudo-intellectual but using inaccurate terminology, real fucking annoying

I just don't understand what I'm supposed to like about this? The ideas are interesting enough but the execution is so boring and detached. Am I supposed to ship the two men? If so, will I ever be presented with any evidence that they love each other? One of them just compared the other to a random dude and it sounded like the random dude was clearly winning. Am I supposed to be invested in any character at all?

It’s so interesting to read White because the autism he portrays is really similar to mine only that I eventually learned to emulate a lot of the things his characters don’t. In this instance, it’s expressing pain. I, at one point, realized that people want me to have a pain reaction and that the consequences of not having one can be, well, more painful than acting (aka constantly putting on a show of myself)

There’s just so much back and forth (in this book and the overarching story), so many character motivations that are not explained sufficiently, so many convenient oversights that I‘m kind of getting annoyed, which makes me very sad. Was looking forward to loving this book not questioning it every other page

Extremely off-put by the „there’s going to be a romance professor-student relationship“ vibes I‘m getting. Can we please not go there? In fact, I would like those vibes to stop altogether. Cool teaching staff can be cool without feeling the need to fuck them.
Also this book makes sex sound highly (!) unpleasant, so why you‘d want to engage in that is a mystery to me.

What is it with people who write in English thinking that Germans would call women "Frau" in Konversation? "One moment, Frau!" sounds so strange knowing German, or "He! Frau!", "Are these men boring you with their talk, Frau?", and "What do you say, Frau?" It's all so very silly. I don't want to be a German purist but it is just so distracting (at least Djèlí Clark does not commit the arch sin of saying "Fraus")

"So then why did she feel she was missing something?" yeah, I wonder why. Maybe it's because you've been spoon-fed every piece of information and this last little detail that people can't spell out for you is too tough of a nut to crack even though people are desperately trying to draw your attention to the correct solution? Say it isn't so. (I'm getting frustrated with this story, which is so very sad and tragic)

At least as of right now, it seems very obvious who is behind all of this. So obvious, that I'm not sure if this is a red herring? Well see. But if I've called it within the first 30-40% and Fatma isn't going to catch on until the end, I'll be at least a little sad.

I only just scratched the surface but I‘m very puzzled by some of the responses I‘ve heard from people about this book over the years. As someone who has worked with children for a long time, I can‘t overlook the „issue“ of age - in fact, with how much Nabokov stressed age over and over again I dare say that I‘m not supposed to ever forget that Humbert is grossly sexualizing children.

Is this… a joke?

Is this story just an excuse to have 3 different romance tropes in one story? .-. I‘m beginning to regret not having looked into the synopsis of this book at all…

Holy hell, if this first chapter is an indicator for the quality of the rest of the book (and my relationship with it), this is going to be an absolute stunner of a story

Tell me why I was set on not continuing with the series for the first 80%, started to reconsider the next 19%, and am now fully on board with reading another tome because of the final 1% of this book?
