Calling this a DNF at the end of part one.

Something interesting has finally happened, but I think it might be too little too late. A vaguely interesting mystery can’t make up for supremely uninteresting characters.

Yeah, I don’t know about this one.
I struggle when there’s no strong protagonist. This follows a couple sets of characters (either two or three), but everything after the initial flashback prologue just feels like pointless meandering.

It doesn’t help that the characters are universally annoying and I kind of want them all to get eaten by giant snakes.

Never an encouraging start to a novel.

Low-key disappointed that the witches do not seem to actually be groovy.

I can’t find any evidence that “bippy” was ever used as slang for cigarettes. It was slang for bottom or butt and cigarettes have butts, so I can see how the author maybe got to it sideways, but having the girls constantly saying bippy or bippies is getting a bit grating.
A very small criticism in an otherwise enjoyable book.

To quote a story by my youngest: no one was amused by the “barf bath”. 🧙‍♀️

There’s a point at which the trauma of the past can no longer excuse the idiocy of the present and the protagonist has absolutely blown past that point.

Kingfisher always makes you want to live in her worlds—even the ones with scary stuff going on. 🌵🦖

I have a feeling that this is going to go exactly where I expect it to.

This one is unexpectedly kind of a slog, at least partially because I don’t like the narrator. (Audio version.)

This is a fantastic, sneaky, and genuinely scary little story. It’s also immensely clever.

Oh geez yikes.

Interesting, but the audio version that I’m listening to feels like it’s being read by an Elvis impersonator.

This is a bit…weird? Not necessarily in a bad way, though. 🐦‍⬛🩸

This is extremely wintery, but not in a cozy way. Brrrr.

Time to admit that I’m not going to finish this one. DNF

“Fog of War” (Ohlander) ⭐️⭐️: An unpleasant and gruesome battle adventure.
“Heart’s Peril” (Paulk) ⭐️⭐️.5 Young Hobgoblins in trouble; backstory heavy and ponderous.
“Heart’s Place” (Hoyt) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ree and Jem get their forever home.

Tchaikovsky is probably the best author-reader that I have yet encountered. 🦖🛸

Finally things are moving along. I love this series, but the setup went on a bit long in this one.

Surprised to see that it’s not just Westerners who will ruin a perfectly good sweet potato by dumping more sweet stuff onto it! Ice cream?!?

Adventure 52 just made me smile so much.

Oh hey, things are actually picking up!

Okay, but who hides in mortal fear by listing their address as the house next door to their actual house?!?

Still kind of a slog, for reasons that are difficult to pin down. I do kind of want to know what happened to Elizabeth, though I have little interest in the protagonist. Weird.
