The story of the swan feather grabs my heart evry time. Immediately the imagery at the beginning of the movie unrolls in my mind + voice + music
This feels a bit more biting in its harshness but colored by the softening of the film
Feel so strange coming bk to this after living in China so many years. Watched the movie many times + years b4 I left the US
I know it’s not the same but it still aches my heart

Overall stop enjoying it but reminded that some ppl never know how much help they have in the world and how little help or even notice others receive in spite of everything

I think the princess divine is possibly one of the most interesting characters in this one, her as well as the demon possessed vixen. But poor Pen to be left alone while the others pair off to go through the animal rescue/hospice

She does the numinous and the unearned mercy better than almost any other author. Gets me every time
I was wondering this time through if she had done any research into actual shaman traditions/experiences before writing - perhaps I guess. Author retains right to invent and build on suggestions of observations I suppose

Start with one character right in the middle of major predicament and the other trying to learn a bit behind the reader what the situation is

Ha! Such a calm smooth denouement after all that excitement of problem after problem after problem! I’d forgotten that last bit about the fruit cake - I remembered what happened to the 1st 2 - eaten during starving times - but not that last discovery - she could have used that earlier! But as her uncle said, one can always use money…or diamonds

Story cooks along; really enjoying it + the narrator is mostly really good, but she obv has a reading problem or is ignorant of a LOT of the English language bc thru this whole book she’s added + mixed up syllables all over the place. Adding in the “untell” pronunc of “until” + sim vowel shifts (an accent I’m familiar w/BUT!) the fact that no one did editing or directing of this is incredibly aggravating

This time it’s bothering me that the only reason the mercenary didn’t kill her was bc she was calm/had military training, which gave her a “quality” that seemed worth saving…great for our heroine; horrifying for any sense of humanity
And her father is worried about her + gets attention + resources to find/save her bc he’s got money + is a corp head…bc apparently adds value galactic speaking. Disturbing

Omg. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a voice that was so like nails in a chalkboard before and I want to SCREAM - I suppose she chose it bc this character is not likely to show up more than that one time, but feels inexcusable for the character’s position + his relationship to the person calling him. Mostly good narration but the narrator’s accent has subtle western NY or Midwest tells that drive me nuts

1. The women who are running every place we hear about, but not doing whatever *thing* that place is known for
2. Grand ending, but what they really shld have done at the least is Menora sit down with Menolly for a chat to ask abt her music + explain she could go learn more if she wanted. But, yes, McCaffrey is queen w/this wonderfully cathartic grand ending instead

Always love this book tho
Even with the family abuse at the beginning, Menolly’s instinct + need for music + her connection w/the fire lizards + dragons as well as her ability to forage + care for herself just pulls me in every time

Feeling very impatient with his youth
Interesting to read of his first experience with hash and thus with marijuana
And his time in the markets bargaining and being bargained

Still love this book
I don’t know how she does it. Nor why she gave it up for the short stuff. But wow the skill. The writing. The plotting. The ideas fleshed out and fulfilled. The characters in their agony and their hope, their mercy and their grief, their joy and their laughter. Everything coming together for a numinous that appears and reappears

I’m enjoying this listen but gotta comment those little annoyances
She’s using ADHD symptoms for her entire character profile for Donna but half the time she’s wrongly defining the symptoms + the other half it’s just a human feature that she’s saying comes from ADHD. It cld be she’s trying to show that Donna has over-identified w/the disorder along w/her sense of being lesser than expectations, but…

It’s a bit baffling that in her adhd struggles she clears their home of stuff inc’g the tv in the common space, says she’s more focused on family time + her husband is always watching tv + she doesn’t see its value. Then we hear she played video games w/her son in his room + so of course kept that equip. ADHD means struggles, but yikes w/the blind selfishness trying to disguise itself as clutter clearing

Enjoying/drawn in at the moment but withholding judgement

Listened to a bit more but I’m just not in the right mode for more academia fantasy. I like the idea of the main character. I like the dragons some but find them disappointing too as they’re much more like pets who are going to be useful when they grow up + even the author is repeatedly comparing their behavior to cats. I think being among the dragon riders of her ppl wld hv drawn me in more
