Margaret: “From an anthropologist’s view, justice is a search for workable customs”
Thorby: “My father…used to say the way to find justice is to deal fairly with other people and not worry about how they deal with you.”
Margaret: “Doesn’t that fit what I said? I think Baslem the Cripple would regard the People as just”

How many times do ppl who only read NY times list books have to have amazing revelations of a particular scifi novel being about real ppl till they realize…scifi is about real ppl?!?🤦‍♀️🙄

And btw, love the Scots glossary, 2 thoughts upon :
1. It seems diabolical that there are these incredibly /cute/ words for implements of torture
2. Hearing the authors’ Scottish voices reading this audiobook was especially wonderful

Thank you for all this work and for sharing it

Onward the Quarrelsome Dames!
This book is wonderfully put together between the broader history, solidly supported, and the individual stories along with discussion of the arguments and issues, going forward to the present, and thoughts in future, which I entirely agree with, having been in some of those circles of rationalization of wrongs in the past
Read this book!📕

Terrible irony that more victims spared fr this terror by denial of “magic”
Oppression first from the calling up of stereotypes + hatred of women + rumors of old beliefs turned to oppression fr denial of ppl’s traditl beliefs + connect to their land/history/traditl culture

- I don’t believe that is where they wld hv drawn the line considering the kinds of confessions they were torturing ppl into
It is kind of interesting that that is where some draw the line in the US argument over diff loves. Not sure what that says about the dev of the argument in each case. Not the worst stance tho close

Mind boggling that they ran these searches in Scotland and in Massachusetts on a rhetorical foundation that beating and abusing and torturing someone would get them to tell the truth so that they could be murdered. What is the incentive? Stop the pain is incentive to say what is wanted; it’s not incentive for truth when the questioner automatically disbelieves the truth bc it doesn’t fit their story

So well read by the authors
Absolutely infuriating

John Knox proves that just like the mod misogynists in the US white house regime every judgement is confession, + the best response is childhood’s “I know you are but what am I”

I’m ashamed to say I grew up in the tradition that reveres these AHs + makes excuses for them (apologetics). And I know ppl who still believe + argue for his bs abt women

The Scots were literally diabolical when it came to the invention of torture methods to those considered lawbreakers though they’ve only been accused
And the extent of the legal self-fulfilled prophecies in the handling of cases that were oh so convenient for particular ppl

Tried to jump ahead to the 1st chapter which was about Aber + begins with mention of a well known prof who friends of mine studied under, but at least at the moment I’m still too bugged that this is a history of study + not the study itself. I picked this up bc it was on the GR challenge list but was excited that I’d get back into IR w/this after not reading it for a while, but this is not it…at least not now

I’m a little frustrated bc it seems it’s not about thought but about IR scholars. And while women’s struggles in academia do interest me, at this moment at least I was more hoping for something about the thought than the ppl engaged in it
