Really surreal reading these war stories. I might cry at some point.

As predicted, I cried my heart out. My flatmate must have heard. Can't remember the last time a book made me cry so hard.

I'm reading a story but I'm scared of it because I know I will cry heartily through it. Don't be deceived by the sparse, simple language of this book. Each of the stories is designed to involve deeply flawed characters. Also, Kawaguchi is a playwright and he adapted this from one of his award-winning plays. Which explains A LOT about its stage-like atmosphere and all the "rules". I'd love to watch it live.

I'm conflicted about this. I'm on page 199 and there is no core mystery yet, leave alone suspects or anything. The depiction of postpartum is a bit insensitive. And mostly it just reads like somebody wrote this about present day Bombay but changed the details to make it 1920s Bombay. Bit jarring. There is no way to verify the historical accuracy short of going through the same research that the author did.
