Well, I'm rooting for these characters a bit more, but they still would need a lot of counseling. They're experiencing personal growth, but their habits would eventually drive each other crazy again, and they don't have the communication skills to navigate that.

How am I supposed to root for these characters when they're so mean to each other (especially Jolene)?

Wow, these are some really amazing examples of primary Hawai'ian language sources and how much was lost/obscured in translation to English (e.g., unmarked 17-page long(!) ellipses, mistranslation of the concept of Akua to "god", etc.)

Important response to "Shoal of Time" and other books about Hawai'ian history, now using Hawai'ian language sources. However, as the title suggests, it comes with a strong dose of Hawai'ian nationalism and nostalgia. I hope that the opinions stated in the intro (e.g., "well-functioning ali'i system") will be explored with more nuance in later chapters. I am especially curious about modern Hawai'ians' viewpoints.

Yes, finally, a family backstory for this character who is so unmoored in time! I hope the protagonist will start to gain ownership over her identity. Also, is it possible for imagery to be so precise and vivid, so clearly from the perspective of a keen observer, that it feels like dissociation? It takes me half an hour to recover from listening to this book and come back to the present.

Abuse is very difficult to read about, especially on-screen. I set this book aside for a while, hoping that it would magically get better, but no such luck. Thinking about whether to skip ahead but I don't think that's possible - it's a central part of the story and keeps happening across generations.
