Hamilton with Adams as President and Jefferson as Vice President. Chernow paints Adams as a buffoon. Without Washington as President, Hamilton recklessly acts as if he were without filters of good judgment. Burr dupes Hamilton and bills the City of New York for a cure of yellow fever he never produces.

It is amazing that Hamilton was the ideal autodidact, capable of mastering so many fields of endeavor. Yet he was constantly attacked by members of Congress and the Senate. His opposition to the terrors of the French Revolution was absolute, recognizing that Britain was the country was the better trading partner. Jefferson'sresignati on from the Cabinet brought relief. But Jefferson was awaiting the Presidency.

Chapter 5, Hamilton in combat. Becomes Washington's Aide-de-Campe.

An Australian frame of mind.

The Brits fought the Japanese in Burma. A war the English want to forget. Germany was defeated over a year ago. It's time to return to normalcy. Dr Sam and Jackie there is no return to normal. Both are poor, without a decent wage, without decent housing. Bombed out urban areas leave a house shortage. Cap it all with Sam and Jackie suffering from "shell shock." Life for them is doolally--crazy.

"Continental Drift," by Russell Bank (1985) has caught my eye. I'll add this to my read stack.

Hmmm...Well, it's a pretty little book. The subject matter appeals. uhm-hmmm. 100 Books to Read and Reread. Yep. THEN I notice this round medallion sticker on the cover. "BARNES & NOBLE EXCLUSIVE EDITION." WAIT A MINUTE! Yeah. The NY TIMES Reviewer who said Roth was a man who essentially was a one trick pony rewriting the same theme, book after book. Flip, flip. Table of contents. SIGH. 270 more pages.

I picked this up at B&N, The title caught my eye. The poets and their poems selected by editors Hoberman and Hopley sold me on the book. The editors beautifully divided the poems into distinct "themes" which specically fill the minds of those of us who are experiencing growing older. As I am 68, I've found a unique book of poetry that captures life as I live it. A book to cherish. It's wonderfull.

I have reached the final tale, Knight's Gambit. Faulkner originally wrote it as short story. He candidly said he realized his mistake and wrote it as novella. It begins three days before Pearl Harbor. Nephew Chick Mallison is headed to begin flight training. Gavin is now fifty. His hair snow white.

Tomorrow: Long before becoming County Attorney, Gavin tried his first case as a defense lawyer in a murder case. He was 28. His Grand Father allowed Gavin to try the case. Everyone believed the case a mere formality. It wasn't.

What a hoot! Edisto cracks me up one page to the next.

Grant, Burnside, and Lincoln are all in to explode Burnside' mine. An experiment. But an even more important experiment is how well black troops will fight. Many, ranking officers are skeptical. White troops express disdain as racist as southern troops. One that is not meant to be raced through.

A Union engineer tunnels toward heavy siege guns. If it works, the Confederate line may be broken. A riveting read.
