“I have forgotten how to make words do what I wish.”

Loving this so far! I liked both Merit and Tevin immediately, and the character diversity has been unexpectedly great. Lots of different ethnicities and skin tones, and at least one lesbian, one bi, and one non-binary character (respectively) so far.

reading this super slowly because I’m reading it out loud to my partner as a bedtime story (his childhood fave), fyi for posterity and whatnot

update: finally got another copy, so I can start reading this again (might start over tho)

only problem: the pages are too nice and thick to dog-ear my favorites, and i already have too many favorites to list them in a review

Nope, can’t do it. Not even sure what it is about this book, but I just can’t get into it.

It’s unfortunate how wildly psychoanalytical this book presents the field as, particularly since these theories have been largely out of practice for decades now and are in reality seen mostly as fringe beliefs.

Oh, we’re already comparing Alicia to his wife? I’m sure that’s a good sign, nbd, totally fine.

Immediately it’s clear that the narrator is incredibly unlikeable and frankly just creepy as hell. He’s beyond obsessed with his patient and seemingly willing to cross just about any line as part of that obsession, which makes him absolutely terrifying right off the bat.

Almost immediately, the author has casually thrown out an idea that strikes me unusually: that American surgeons, indeed Americans in general, are filled with hope and optimism, in contrast to his fellow Brits, whom he describes as weary skeptics. It’s a strange but good reminder in these difficult times that Americans do have this trait, even now.
