Almost immediately, the author has casually thrown out an idea that strikes me unusually: that American surgeons, indeed Americans in general, are filled with hope and optimism, in contrast to his fellow Brits, whom he describes as weary skeptics. It’s a strange but good reminder in these difficult times that Americans do have this trait, even now.
