I’m recording it now because I think my view will likely change, but I really feel for Briony. She’s been introduced to an adult thing that she doesn’t understand and no one is granting her any patience or explanation. Meanwhile, poor Lola. So much of this story hinges on adult neglect.

I love vivid description and books set in hot oppressive summers. I love the interwar period and books set in big houses. I love the lens of childhood, and adulthood, and the cusp between them both.
