Cheezus, 1992 was a long-ass time ago.

I'm used to hearing this narrator on YA fantasy, and it's lending this an air of unrealism. So weird.

This woman is meddlesome and nosy AF. I guess that's how people solve murders?

The men in this one suck. Stay single or marry your roommate. She rules.

The choice to name the book's undead monsters "children of the night" is...well, I wouldn't have, but whatever. But the choice to then shorten that to "children" when referring to them stalking, attacking, etc. is absurd. Listening to the audiobook as the MC talks about them being controlled by a rogue witch sounds like a Scooby Doo outtake.

"Most *people* in Iri went around without shirts and only a bandeau for the *women*."

Hrm.

This book in audio is 62 hours and 48 minutes, which for the arithmetically challenged is a bit over 2 and 1/2 days long. This strikes me as insanely self-indulgent, so justify yourself, book.

OK, look, I am prepared to suspend a lot of disbelief and for this book I have, but telling me that nobody in New Orleans and the surrounding area knows how to make bullets? I'm sorry, but that is a bridge too far.

What if there were a classic literature Choose Your Own Adventure series? What if you could be Elizabeth Bennett and reject all proposals and strip naked and run screaming into the woods? Or you could be Gatsby and decide you don't need that Buchanan drama and just give in to the night life and your budding alcohol problem?

Is this a sad mid-life Choose Your Own Adventure?

OK, this was not meant to be listened to. I thought it would be more "Trust me, I'm a professional" and not so much "This plus this is this and this plus this is this and this plus this is this and this plus this is this..."

Huh. For the second time in a linguistics book, encountering the comparison of rejecting a person's gender identity with rejecting a person's name, calling it "weird" and ignoring the practice of rejecting a person's name and replacing it with one's own preference as used in othering marginalized communities.

I used to know someone who, when a black person cropped up in an anecdote she was relating, would describe them to me as "BLACK black, not like you -- you know what I mean." This guy reads like he's heard a lot of that and taken it as complimentary.

Magic, I can get onboard. Demons, sure. Checking a painting potentially worth $10 mil in your luggage on an international flight, ehh, OK? But a mother dropping a hint about her romantic past and then quickly changing the subject and offspring directs her back to pursue the topic deeper? This is a bridge too far and defies belief.

I feel like a child complaining about the length of a book, but this is a long book and it feeeeeeels like a loooooooong booooooooooook. So much posturing. Will someone please blow something up or stab someone consequential? And poisonings don't count if they don't stick.

Welp. Appears that's more racism that I myself am prepared to handle for the mediocre entertainment value. It's here I gave it up.
