Huh. For the second time in a linguistics book, encountering the comparison of rejecting a person's gender identity with rejecting a person's name, calling it "weird" and ignoring the practice of rejecting a person's name and replacing it with one's own preference as used in othering marginalized communities.

Follow-up: I emailed Curzan on the subject, and she responded (ee!) very kindly, thanking me for thoughtful feedback, regretting moving too quickly through the sectiion, and assuring updates in the next print run. I'm really appreciative of how receptive she was.
