We are at the trial for the First Gentleman.

The Enigma machine was available before WWII. It was used commercially for banks and other financial agencies. I kind of it figured out how the machine worked and what you had to do to decode it. There are actually cell phone apps to simulate the Enigma machine.

Alan Turing had two theories. One was that a computer machine could do multiple jobs and programs could be stored in the computer’s memory. He theoretically proved this in 1936 in a paper he wrote and presented.

I was able to renew for another 14 days from the Philadelphia Public Library.

This book is due back in 3 days. Ugh!

The “Universal Computing Machine” was proved capable of by mathematics. But Turing was not just making something theoretical. He was putting his ideas into practice. turning said there would be tape with symbols on it. The machine would also have wheels and levers and a dial as the machine’s memory.

Alan was sentenced to one year of probation for homosexual acts. The probation included a hormone treatment that caused Alan to grow breasts and be chemically castrated. He was not seen as a criminal. He was seen as mentally ill.

I’m fascinated by Alan Turing. He invented the computer and helped the Allies win the war.

The Russians are approaching the camps in Poland. It seems like Gita is getting back to her homeland (Slovakia) and her brothers. Lali is transferred to a concentration camp in Austria. Will they meet again?

Really loving this book. It scary how bad human beings can be to one another.
