Love love love this so far. A Marxist history of Rome. Amazing

On the Book of Numbers now, Chapter 1 done. Very funny to me how this is instantly more interesting than what came before. A historical fiction where we see the trials and tribulations of a family in 1800s Philippines, just around the Revolution.

Chapter 5 done. Things get interesting with Adrian’s encounter with Colonel Amor. References to Philippine rebellions are made. Also very Martial Law coded scene

Chapter 4. Anna goes into a flashback on her activist days. Seems like early Martial Law? Mention of Recto Avenue chaos reminds me of last September. So she was married to a Manolo before.

Finished the section on Economic Independence. Great. So great. Senator Recto’s words still ring true. The Philippines has so much raw materials yet we give them away to foreigners instead of developing them into our own goods. We pay for goods foreigners process for us. We are treated as children, unable to produce ourselves. Funny though, Recto, with all his Marxist analysis on economics, hates communists.

Love the character of Doris Kilman, the long suffering working class woman, caretaker of Elizabeth Dalloway. After spending much of the novel following the POV of rich people like Clarissa, Peter Walsh, High Whitbread, here’s someone who’s actually closer to me.

“Here he was walking across London to say to Clarissa in so many words that he loved her. Which one never does say, he thought. Partly one’s lazy; partly one’s shy.”

Real so real. Little passages like these show how Woolf captures truthfully how people think. It’s romantic and awkward at the same time.

There’s a beautiful passages I read where Septimus finds beauty in Regent’s Park. Maybe it was the yearner Peter Walsh actually whose thoughts and perspectives blend seamless with Septimus and his wife Rezia. Poor Septimus mans has awful PTSD, wanting to kill himself now and then, in between moments of tranquility.

Finished Chapter 10. Now I see how Hillary got the lead in the Democratic primaries. Oh well, she did have the network. Gotta admit it's impressive how Mook's gamble of not campaigning worked since they were sure to win lol. Can't wait for that mindset to backfire tho

Finished Chapter 5. It's kind of mindboggling to see how George Lucas and Martin Scorsese were advising Francis Ford Coppola in making The Godfather. I know the hell Coppola goes through for his films but it's still inspiring to read lmao. Seems like an awful guy to work for but what a juicy story of stubbornness

Just finished Act 4. Brutus and Cassius bickering lmao meanwhile Octavius and Mark Antony plan their retaliation against the assassins. This act really humanizes the conspirators, allowing to see the differences in their personalities and even beliefs

Just finished Act 3. Quite possibly the most iconic part of the book. And it's a great act to read as Brutus and Mark Antony compete for the hearts and minds of Romans in the wake of Caesar's assassination. Each men give iconic speeches. Brutus's is my favorite but Antony is amusingly cunning. Honestly idk which man to believe. Caesar appears contradictory. Tyrant but also beloved by the masses.

Just finished Chapter 7. Reading this it's crazy how I never realized how much of a bloodbath those Democratic caucuses were. Hillary always seemed like the clear Democratic choice that time and Bernie was on the margins. But yeah I wish Bernie won.

Just finished Chapter 4 about the rise of Bernie amd Trump as rivals. Man I really didn't know how much Hillary sucked as a candidate. Only thing she really ran on was that she was a woman. But does it matter in the end when you're still an untrustworthy politician who's been a part of the rotten American system

Finished Act 2. I get Brutus' motivation to join the conspiracy against Caesar since Shakespeare roots it in his ancestors' rebellion against the last Roman king. But I suppose historic propaganda really makes you treat Brutus and company unfavorably lol. I like the bit where they decide whether or not Marc Antony should be killed

Just finished Act 1. Cassius comes across as devious to me. Like I understand the apprehension behind Caesar or maybe I'm just biased because I know how it all goes down and how it's all told by historians. An act of cruelty something like that

Everybody talks about Martial Law. But the book's chapters on the period after, spanning from Aquino to Estrada, really paint a portrait of an unstable country. It's pretty insane to read as a twentysomething. I remember terrorism being a big deal when I was younger. And now I see why. The amount of state-supported militias is scary. Also Ping Lacson is one of Philippine history's underrated villains

Finished Part One: U.S. Colonial Police. The last section discussed this Captain Van Deman who became Father of US intelligence. A cunning demon really. May he rot in hell for providing right wingers with information on radicals and other undesirables.

I blame this book for me cramming all my requirements loool. Too good I can't put it down. Lee Harvey Oswald has finally been introduced. Little bit different view than the one by Oliver Stone for his 1991 film JFK. This account sees Oswald as a genuine Marxist if a bit naive. Still, the CIA has there prints on him
