After reading Kiev 1941, The Longest Winter and Battleground Prussia, it's so hard to read this book knowing that an inevitable human catastrophe ensues. Worse than his abject jingoism and racial supremacy ideology...he really thinks he knows best for die Germanic Volk while describing other races as vermin & human filth. Dehumanising people as infections paved the way for his Lebensraum plan, Operation Barbarossa.

Lacking profundity, the author definitely read Crime and Punishment.
He acknowledges that writing is not his bag, and it ain't.
With the grace of a drunken bear cub he describes in a blanket statement, witnessing Marmeladov intemperance (Crime and Punishment) during his time in Wien. Barely containing his antipathy, he views sentimentality (human attachment?) as weakness and he hints about decision making...

Watching thrillers and horror movies with my teenage kids would not prepare them for the horrors described in this book. Horrors committed by Stalin's regime upon Russians for the most trivial of infractions. By artifice and deceptive contrivances, in order to fulfill arrest quotas. Truly harrowing.
