“The recognition that immunity is a process of negotiation and damage management, rather than a complicated kind of passport control at the border of self and other, has profound implications. Illness is not simply caused by a foreign entity: it is the body’s response to damage [external or internal]. Humans are not little states with their own border patrol but assemblies in a web of life.”

“Marxist analyses usually begin with the economic infrastructure without investigating the ecological context, that is the soil, water, animal, mineral, and vegetable bases of a society in which the infrastructure is embedded. There is inadequate appreciation of ecological infrastructure. We propose to complement the concept of modes of production with concept of modes of resource use.”

“The inflammatory diseases we are seeing today are not the cause of the body’s dysfunctional reactions. They are the body’s correct responses to a pathological world. To understand what’s driving inflammation, we must account for the things our bodies have been exposed to, in the places where our lives have been circumscribed. And to offer a treatment, we must show how we can escape.”

"Rather than stamping everything foreign as automatically bad, the immune system behaves more subtly, embracing a truth that many politicians don’t: most foreigners are friends, not foes."

granted, im still in the beginning pages of the book and I AM completely vibing with it but one day I want to read a good faith critique on the critics of teleology. it's such a taboo word that sometimes also encompasses any sort of bold vision that activists have to build a world and just puts a nihilistic wet blanket over any constructive discourse.
