It's ridiculously irritating how the voice of this story is NOT a teen in any way. Simon and Garfunkle? What 17 year old boy do YOU know who's ever even heard of Simon and Garfunkle??????? Maybe if this were set when the middle-aged author was a teen, sure. I can't wait for this inane book to be done.

UGH. For being just over a hundred pages, this is the slowest book ever. 🙄

Reading this alongside my 7 year old, so this will be slow going. Liking it so far!

Did anyone edit this book? Within fewer than 20 pages, one character has had THREE DIFFERENT last names?!?!?!?!? 🤨 Is she Iris Mulroney (as she was on p. 208), Iris Muldoon (as she was on p. 225), or Iris Tabor (p. 226)???? I can’t be the only person to notice this inaccuracy, can I?

As other reviewers have noted, the first third of this is engaging, if slow. But I find myself increasingly annoyed by Esme's lack of personality. She's supposed to be 24 and still acts and thinks the same as she did at 6? Some naivety could be expected from a young woman at this time, but she seems to have the same perspective as her childhood self. Hopefully I'm wrong and it gets better.

The nod to To Kill a Mockingbird is obviously intentional, and well done. The tone, the descriptive writing, and the subject matter are at once familiar and fresh.
