ADDICTING. I love a book with short, but somehow gripping chapters. It works quite well. Even if one POV is boring, it's short and you can quickly/eagerly get to the person you've been waiting to read more about. I am wishing I bought a new, not a used copy - mostly bc now I'm liking this book SO much. I hope it doesn't have a "twist" ending/subplot like The Family Experiment did

I wasn't really expecting there to be all the jumping around timeline-wise. I could've previewed it since I'm reading the book digitally but now that I've started, I sort of don't want to DNF bc I'm trying to fill a challenge requirement

This book is too long and I think his longing for his ex would be less… weird if the version of her he meets again wasn’t 16 and he’s in his like 30-40s. Like. There’s nostalgia and longing but the way Murakami writes/involves women and sex/attraction is very… interesting

I definitely would've preferred a more linear timeline for the sake of connecting with the characters but it's not that bad so far. His books still don't strike me as much as I would like it to, but they're not bad

I read the description and YET idk why but I was hoping this would be a supernatural thriller ?? So I’m disappointed so far that this is not my jam but I’m also an idiot who didn’t read closely enough

Yeaaaah this style of storytelling isn't for me, just like I thought. If I cared more about preserving my time, I'd DNF. The plot is so small too

The physical copy was mightyyyy tempting because it's so pretty but I wasn't sure if I was going to love the narrative/POV style so I passed for now. If it's higher than like a 4 star read, I might buy in the future

I have to consider whether I want to DNF this or not. I just bought it, so I’d prefer to finish but the dream world stuff isn’t balanced with reality the way I thought it would be and the age gap romance stuff my mind is struggling with — especially bc Riko is written so simplistically and idk if that’s an Innocent Girl thing or translation tonal issues at work

Maybe it's semi important/helpful that I read Jane Eyre because I have not, and I do not get any references to the classic so far

She's immediately into the dude with the maybe dead wife. Sorta yuck.

Little/quick work read

Very interesting commentary so far on sex work, surrogacy, and donors. Only character I’m not fond of is the wife’s friend. Everyone else is interesting

Everyone in this book is even more suspicious and unlikable/crazy in this one than they usually are

A surprising amount of pop culture and global references. Not a fan, but I dig the general vibe of the story.

Wow the face short story was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be

I feel like The Lake would’ve been a much better chapter had the name system not been so confusing/wordy 😭 my brain just did not want to keep track of the who’s who and the genders. I wish the whole thing was just one narrative and not short stories

About halfway through and I don’t really like the main character? The book is sort of dull? But it’s also so short that I’ll probably just finish the entire thing even though I feel pretty meh.

It’s actually crazy how horny she is and the fact that a) her name is Waldo? and b) this book takes place in Alaska of all the states to choose from.

I’m not sure how I feel about his writing still and the way he always writes women/relationships with women is… it gives the ick.

So that’s the life ceremony huh. Maybe the cover should’ve been a hint omg. I just always pick up whatever this author writes

I sort of hate that she gets made at the rich kids for their parents pulling them when… they could also still die before graduating. The only reason why all the poor kids have died is because the plot 🙄 the richer kids are written to be more generally skilled/prepared. Both (?) of Ned’s brothers died and they’re higher standing

I’m not a massive fan of M-Bot either 😩 I think I’d like the other cadets more if they were written like the author/main POV cared about them at all
