I feel like it drops you into the world too abruptly without really explaining the structure of things? Like you get more world building from the stuff surrounding the book than the narrative itself so far

I remember being much more into this book the first time around- but I think I just have some reading burnout for the year. When I’m done with this and Red City, I’m probably not reading another book till 2026.

Ok great I hate BOTH the mentor romances and how they came about. Honestly, I had high hopes bc this book looks so pretty but the mob stuff isn't really for me? in this way, and yeah ugh. I'm just not a fan but I'm too far into the generally **good** story to stop. I just won't read the sequel

Wait... isn't that his... teacher/mentor? Also I feel like the way time passes is too *passive* and I'm not a fan of the way it's done so casually. Like, it would've taken "too long" to make an entire book their childhood and then age them up, but I just feel like it's almost too accelerated that I can't say I care/believe too much that they're both geniuses

I don't love that we've skipped ahead so much time and they're "in love"

I'm not sure how I feel about Sam. Also, they're so young but I feel like the tone/way Sam and Ari are written gives off someone older than middle school

I forgot how LONG some of these chapters are. I wonder if it felt "quicker" bc last time I read the mass market paperback and the shape might've given me a different feel/impression

Rereading

The first story was good but holy shit I hate paragraphs that take up the entire page. It’s so boring to read people just dumping information to you directly like that

My BAM had this on sale for Black Friday. I didn’t realize it was book 7 in the series. So I’m hoping that it sort of doesn’t matter

I think her alter ego + assuming that Jack is vanilla because… he’s a firefighter (?) is pretty dumb. I could probably read the rest of the book in no time because I can probably guess how it’s all gonna go

Short story novels are sort of always a hit or miss for me, but I think what isn't working for me on this one is that it's one of those "this person is retelling someone else's story"/it's in the present/main character's POV but the chapter is actually someone else's POV

I'm not a massive fan of the main character but it is *generally* a cute story

About halfway through. I'm enjoying it but I wouldn't say I feel super strongly about it. I read some spoilers, which sorta did make me want to DNF but also - I think knowing what happens will help me curb the anticipation/disappointment for the ending

There are bits I **really** enjoy but there are other long stretches of... her writing style that just plop you into another location/scene bc the middle parts are on some type of tangent - that I don't really enjoy, stylistically

Too many characters and too much going on with the plot that isn't....well organized, I think because of how many characters there are. Like, is this book about this room or finding out about the sister's death? The title + summary makes it seem more like the room, but the actual plot events is very sister-focused

Losing me a little with the TikTok mention and "I don't hunt ghosts. I f*ck them. I'm a ghost f*cker" line

The reviews are iffy but I saw that this fits a GR reading challenge so here we go.
