So now he's a creepy weirdo. Character reactions to Ansel just feel really inconsistent

The female characters’ weird, insta-obsession with Ansel is driving me nuts. It would be one thing if Kukafka was commenting on psychopaths’ supposed charisma but Ansel isn’t even saying anything half the time. And when he is, it doesn’t really scream “charisma” but all the characters act like it. This book is trying too hard

Seriously considering DNF’ing this because I can’t suspend my disbelief enough that Mickey is actually a historian. Historians love griping about how history isn’t just reading sources. We do it all the time, and he just accepted the criticism that historians are useless when everyone has access to it. I don’t care how much the future changes; historians will never agree that they don’t serve a purpose

Prob DNF at 30%. Need to return to library and not sure if it’s worth reborrowing. I’ve finished the first section on ‘being’ and it was a hot mess overall. The stories felt disconnected. Many of the essays were badly written/underdeveloped, but a couple essays were good. The one on being deaf in prison and the one on how a cure model is harmful even when a cure is wanted were well written and impactful.

You know it's bad when a character has to say he's the comic relief because the author is too incompetent to show it

Just because a metaphor sounds pretty doesn't mean it's a good metaphor. They're supposed to help the reader understand the situation or empathize with the feelings of characters; here they don't make sense and distract from the overall story

Man the main character is obnoxious in this one. She acts like an angsty, selfish teenager
