This is a book that is saved by its ability to make you feel for its main character. I say 'saved' because it is rife with similes--so many, in fact, that I found myself annoyed and distracted with the writing itself. But the main character, Ove, just gets you, and the story is warm and tender with a feel-good ending.

Oh, Marcel, you son of a gun. I urge you to stay on task, you tenderhearted, swirly poet novelist. At least we can say this: no one writes about love, about tea and biscuits, and about the dreamlike quality of childhood like you do. Now, then, please make up your mind. Poetry or prose?
