more pining than i expected tbh! not complaining though!

ok. so. i feel like i can look at tova and say that her motivation is to always be doing something to avoid her grief. but cameron.. what's his deal? it feels like he's looking for... family? not in what he says but how he acts when familial things happen to him. idk. nate eastman maybe you're onto something. anyway this book is still very good. there's a chance for something very cool to happen in the final act

oh now we're getting into the MEAT of it. very exciting to see their desires bring them into weird and unexpected spaces

oh that's fun!! love to see character misfortunes dovetailing. and i love how much ethan glues everything together. i never realized how much a town might need a gossip

hmm. this is a cool way to think about stories but idk if this is how i want to think about writing... we'll let it play and see

so far this book is a solid four. i'm interested in where it's going and it doesnt seem like theres a lot of places where it could get fucked up. i like the characters. im now terrified of what the octopus might say, which is a really fun sentence to utter

FINALLY.

i do wish fewer of these chapters ended with "until i learned all of her secrets when she got old and developed dementia and told me everything i needed to know" tbh. you've foreshadowed it enough babe i promise. i'm not particularly in a hurry to get through the next like 40+ years of this character's life to get to that moment, so why are you?

oh the old style of narration is so delightful. i feel like im in an agatha christie novel except everyone is french

"write endlessly until you discover the plot of the novel you're writing" he says. "you'll just know when it's a novel! just delete the things that don't fit in the book as well! just stay confident!" like. okay man. i really thought there'd be something other than the reader's intuition to-- hold on he just referenced the other writing advice book i just finished. you really aren't gonna say anything new, huh. okay.
