Well organized overview of some principal areas of modern interest in mathematics. "Well organized" in the way the chapters build from one to the next, drawing broad connections between fields as seemingly disparate as fractals, chaos, and life (the cell game). Good chapter on higher dimensionalities and what they mean. If you wish you knew more math, this is good reading. Martin Gardner liked it. Nuff said.

The subject is philology, literally the love of language, and he's re-thinking its foundations and its rightful role in our world. The style is aphoristic and often paradoxical, reminiscent of Nietzsche. Brilliant, I'm sure. Often interesting. You'll know if this is for you. Or not...

This is an important book. Bostrom has both a technical and philosophical understanding of the challenges presented by self-aware AI, what some call the coming "singularity". The logic of his risk analyses is thorough and hard to argue with, and his conclusion is that the risks are great. Clearly written and argued, engrossing, but not aimed at a general audience so much as one with some interest in the field.

This is an important book. Bostrom has a deep understanding of the challenge of self-awareness in AI at both a technical and philosophical level. This is a sustained strategic assessment of the risks of the coming AI singularity, with a focus on the logic of each move and counter-move. It's a disturbing but important read.
