I really loved Binti: Sacred Fire, the short story that was added to the omnibus. It deals with Binti processing the trauma that she experienced in the first novella and with her finding a way to Oomza Uni home.

1) HUGE CW for this book. Emotional abuse and rape (and that's only so far? I hear there's more?)

2) I'm not sure if Ms. James isn't a great writer, hasn't dealt with her past traumas enough to write about them well, or is a terrible audiobook narrator, but this book just isn't grabbing me so far. I'd abandon it ant this point if it weren't for a book club.

Update: I've started using headphones to listen to this in my own apartment because I'm worried my neighbors can hear the steamy parts through the walls and are judging me.

Wow. Glad I'm listening to this in my apartment instead of on the subway. I knew basics of the story going in, but it is definitely racier than I expected. It definitely made cooking dinner more interesting.

We've gone almost 50 pages without rocket themed dirty talk between the Drs York. I think it's a record for this book.

The rocket analogies during sex scenes are...ew?

I've been thinking for a while that I just don't like the way Elma makes herself small all the time. Nearly 200 pages in, we finally got a reveal that shows how severe her anxiety is & understand that making herself small isn't a tropey 50s housewife/response to the patriarchy thing (but statements like "I just want to be Mrs. York" still feel that way even with new understanding). This book is frustrating.

Why does it take a third of the book to find out that the main character has a PhD in math and physics? And why do I learn this information from Mr. Wizard?
